BUTTERFIELD / BARTHA – “Take Me to the Land of Jazz”
Delmark, 2005
DIXIELAND – Two late 60s/early 70s sessions by Fort Lauderdale, Florida cornetist Andy Bartha. Bartha had a long career working with Pee Wee Hunt and others. The first 10 tracks feature Billy Butterfield on trumpet, who himself came near greatness playing with swing greats in the 30s and 40s. It’s all pretty decent traditional jazz, although I find the rhythm section stiff on some of the Butterfield tracks. 11-15 have a much breezier flow.
Fo’s Picks: 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15
1. upbeat stomp, catchy melody
2. another stomp: a happy classic
3. midtempo, stiff beat, nice solos
4. bluesy drag, everybody’s loose
5. high-steppin’ circus march
6. loose N.O. blues, great solos
7. low drag, growlin’ and slidin’
8. upbeat, bouncy rag
9. another slow drag, vocal later on
10. slow military intro, then happy “Dixie”
11. breezy jug stomp, loose and fun
12. sneaky uptempo parlor house jam
13. laid back dixie blues
14. happy bounce, swings nicely
15. uptempo jam, everybody’s loose
