Ferociously intense stop/start prog-math freakouts. This lineup of the Luttenbachers features the jaw-dropping Mick Barr from Orthrelm/Octis on guitar, though he sometimes refrains from the kind of nonstop modernist shredding featured on Orthrelm albums. With the exception of the improvisations (tracks 3 and 5) these are re-recordings with the new lineup of old Luttenbachers material from the last three albums. Best: 2, 3, 7 1.Stuttery beginnings. Guitar and bass basically sound as if they're doing their own unrelated things at times (and that's not bad); alternates later between herky-jerky bits and more rocking, straightforward bits. 2.Propulsive bass, with some very high shrieking guitar. Some high distorted rapid chorded guitar strumming with a pounding rhythm section, then seriously off the hook soloing from Barr. 3.Would be at home on Shub-Niggurath album; heavy zeuhl bass and fast distorted ominous guitar playing. Relentless, though there's a brief breather towards the end. 4.This is from the first of the Luttenbachers' brutal-prog albums, Infektion and Decline. The guitar tone on this piece is interesting; very reminiscent of Yowie, who feature two guitars tuned a quarter-tone apart. The music is driving drums with the guitars playing some nice off-kilter patterns, stop-start in the middle. Ends with what sounds like a homage to Magma's “De Futura”. 5.Short improv, one crazy insectoid guitar and one (probably Barr) just going nuts all over; very high energy. 6.Barr plays bass on this one. There are occasional bits of catchy melody in the guitar! Very occasional. This is one of the less insane tracks. 7.Goes through a ton of changes; this is an excellent example of the general method, with some nice insectoid guitar and lots of rapid shifts. |
