Experimentalism (“noise”?) that brings to mind altogether Eno’s early Ambient works, John Hassel, My Bloody Valentine, Flying Saucer Attack. While he uses the tools and tones of most contemporary experimentalists, he somehow hits a nerve and delves into territory that can only be described as epic, with looping tones, allowing bursts to fly and silence to scream out that re-defines “glitch” (yes, I also thought the cd player was truly broken when I first played this). Three tracks, all really hypnotic, long, the latter two scratch the itch that up til now only Kevin Shields/My Bloody Valentine could. But I say to just jump to the last track, play all of it in its 22 minutes of glory and see if you come through the other side unscathed or unchanged. Did I say “epic” already? Stunning.
1) 12:00, noise bursts over subliminal electro-loops, sounds like the cd player is broken but its really just priming your brain for whats to come
2) 17:00, guitar appears then a long hypnotic loop of My Bloody Valentine’esque tones, like Shields’ treatment of Mogwai, which ends abruptly upon which a whole new landscape appears, then back to the Mogwai/Shields wash of sound
3) 22:00, Sort of an amalgam of the previous 2, but it works, layers, bursts, long and hypnotic, does not leave any dead air at end, just uses some silence so don’t cut off early
