“Experimental singer-songwriter indie pop”. Not that people haven’t mixed “precious” songs with experimentation (think early Pink Floyd, His Name is Alive, Alex Chilton, Beck or anything on the 4AD label). But in this day of “anti-folk” and with everyone slipping and falling all over themselves on the puke layered floor that is indie rock, its refreshing to see someone really go heavy on the juxtaposition. Think: cutesy café style precious “fragile” guy with guitar in the outer recording studio and some fucked up engineer guy like the Big Chief pushing buttons here and there in the control booth that throws in backwards tracks, bloops and blips of loops, samples, and extreme effects. It’s a nice mix, might even bridge the gap for many. Call this an “entry level drug” for indie popsters looking to get into the avante. If you’re not quite ready, there are enough “normal” tracks that have just the right amount of interesting treatments ( trks 3, 5 )
FCCs: 7 My picks: 1, 2, 3
1) acoustic guitar with nice backwards tracking, experimental for first half, then turns into a quite pleasant acoustic/folk indie pop ballad that gets weird again with the click of a switch
2) simple café song with noise and stuff blurping in here and there
3) a bit more sane, simple indie pop, slow and sensitive, pretty
4) minimal, instrumental, loops and simple tones
5) another more normal one, mid paced and mindful, like a slow bike ride in the sunny countryside, Pink Floyd’y
6) instrumental: simple guitar lick, more spacey guitar and trippy picking
7) FCC
8) instrumental, brief
9) gross beat and slick feel, makes me second guess anything I said, avoid
10) simple basic sing-song acoustic, again w/ interesting treatments
11) brief instrumental, studio junk, intro to next
12) more acoustic pop, sawed bow, did he say he cry’s when he cums? Indie rockers…
