It's great that jazz singer Barber packs a lot of experimental ideas, but this set doesn't work. Soft storybook feel with occasional gospel choir, gentle guitar, and other touches ... I applaud the effort to try something different, but the results here don't play out well. The songs get dull quickly, and they dip heavily into smooth jazz (8) or -- oh no -- lite rock (10, which also includes a rap that lists endangered species).
