Free jazz led by Brotzmann's ferocious sax. A nice trio jam, with long stretches of often aggressive sax and/or trombone played over fast, supple drums. Brotzmann blows pretty hard without overpowering things; the sparse trio setup lets him move in and out of the spotlight rather casually. Mangelsdorff shows off some nice skills, expecially on the catchy track 2. |
Peter Brotzmann (sax), Albert Mangelsdorff (trombone), Gunter "Baby" Sommer (drums/"horns")
1- (20:43) Slow crash into a tumbling improv of midlevel viciousness. Quieter middle, with some soft melodic sax as a segue. Final few minutes include some full-throttle sax screaming.
2- (17:14) Wispy drums intro, into a cooking groove with trombone, fast and calm, til about -10:00. Brotzmann takes over with high vicious squeaks for a few minutes, then a slower but still intense segment.
3- (4:01) Playful little march, into a swirling free spiral, fast but relaxed
