HOT CLUB OF DETROIT – “Hot Club of Detroit” Mack Avenue, 2006 GYPSY SWING – The happy, infectious café-jazz sound pioneered by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s lives on in Detroit. These young swingers have a fairly standard "hot club" lineup of three acoustic guitars plus upright bass, but they ditch the usual violin in favor of accordion and clarinet for extra bounce. This disc mixes standard repertoire (Belleville, Nuages, Stompin' at Decca) with the unusual (The “Godfather” theme... at 11 minutes!) The musicians all play their butts off, and several tracks are long enough for them to let the solos develop. Long live Django! All very good.
