RAÚL JAURENA – “Te amo tango”
Soundbrush, 2006
TANGO – Jaurena is a Uruguayan-American bandoneón player with a wide-ranging resume in classical and jazz. He’s joined by string quartet and piano in this classy, elegant performance of mostly original tunes.
Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 14
1. 3:53 – striding midtempo; well-mannered piano break, flittering bandoneón
2. 4:16 – 1st half: moody nighttime creep / 2nd half: fem vocal, more lively
3. 8:00 – lots of drama: heavy stomping, lyrical breaks for violin, bandoneón
4. 3:06 – sweet melody, almost like a cakewalk; very nice chamber feel
5. 8:11 – an old chestnut handled playfully: sweeping, with strong interaction
6. 4:03 – choppy rhythm, cute interplay, moving bandoneón solo in middle
7. 3:17 – stormy fem vocal, much rolling of “r”s…
8. 3:03 – bright and breezy, sounds like a theatrical scene-change
9. 8:10 – carefully constructed piece with a long, gentle bandoneón solo
10. 2:30 – quick pace, with breathless fem vocal
11. 3:28 – forceful, sweeping melody with a cinematic touch
12. 3:26 – striding, almost jaunty tune, sweet violin break, insistent bandoneón
13. 3:05 – folksy, tumbling theme, dignified yet humble, a cute tune
14. 8:41 – sophisticated modern arrangement, in several moods/phases
