Doniki – Radikal Expressions (Makafresh)
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/21/06
Roots rock reggae by an up and coming Jamaican artist. Good voice, solid backing musicians, suitably inscrutable and mystical lyrics. Nothing earthshaking, but all pleasing, esp. tracks 7 and 10 (which just happen to feature dancehall toasting by Kulcha Knox.) No FCCs.
1. **midtempo roots rock bubble, nice message, harmonies.
2. ***a bit uptempo “stepping razor” vibe, fascinating lyrics (“Mussolini, him was a big ol’ meanie” – gotta love that!)
3. **midtempo skank, nice horns and synth
4. **rather uptempo with a bit of 70’s pop feel
5. *a bit downtempo, fair amount of synth
6. *uptempo and upbeat
7. ****somewhat uptempo, interesting combination of rootsy hand drums and modern-sounding synth effects. Kulcha Knox raps.
8. **midtempo, jaunty song about the coming apocalypse. Whee!
9. *midtempo
10. ****midtempo and upbeat with lots of horns, guest toast by Kulcha Knox.
11. ***a bit downtempo, rub-a-dub dance groove.
12. *somewhat uptempo and jaunty – about love problems…
13. ***a bit downtempo, forceful, cool percussion, lots of reverb, almost dubby.
14. Slow, smooth jazz kind of groove in the horns, but with nyahbinghi drums. A bit baffling.
