Zulu – The Dark ½: Riddim Killah
Reviewed by Sadie O., 1/29/07
Dancehall with big phat riddims, Panamanian artist with Jamaican accent, now part of the Chicago underground hip hop scene. Many of the songs are distinctly un-PC – and 4 of them have quite a few FCC violations – but dear lord these are the phattest riddims I’ve heard in ages… Zulu also has quite a vocal range – check track 3.
FCCs on 1, 5, 11 and 13. Tracks 7, 9 and 13 kick no uncertain ass.
1. 3:06 FCCs repeated “Fuckers” “bitches”… Midtempo bloopy riddim, badman lyrics.
2. 3:07 ***slightly uptempo snare-based riddim, sexual boasting lyrics, great vocal sound, a bit of “exotic” instrumentation.
3. 3:38 *mild putdown of “metrosexuals” at intro, then great slightly uptempo riddim. Hard to make out lyrics – probably a bit naughty.
4. 3:16 *downtempo riddim, female chorus.
5. 3:36 ** FCC “shit” several times. downtempo riddim, vocals syncopated along with drum
6. 4:25 ***midtempo danceable riddim, unapologetic lyrics. Extremely suggestive rap from Luchie – use your discretion.
7. 3:47 ****slightly downtempo KILLAH dancehall riddim, dance lyrics.
8. 2:47 ***slightly downtempo, another amazing riddim with lots of electronic noises.
9. 3:16 ****midtempo, another sick riddim, sexy gal lyrics.
10. 3:08 **midtempo, minimalist riddim, suggestive and often non-PC lyrics.
11. 3:38 FCCs “Fuck dat”, “shit” ***midtempo rather metallic (not the heavy kind) riddim. Pity about the FCCs, the riddim is fun.
12. 3:00 **** midtempo Bhangra riddim, great!
13. 3:07 FCCs – fuck, shit. ***manic uptempo almost soca riddim.
