Smokey chanteuse jazzy twangy bluesy singer-songwriter employing the skills of Nels Cline (“…guitar, weird sounds”), DJ Bonebrake (original X drummer) and other all-stars including Tom Waits ex-pats. Fans of Tom Waits, Rikki Lee Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Calexico, Giant Sand, Nick Cave, do not (DO NOT) miss this one. Eleni is so talented that she can slay an audience with just her voice and guitar, but when she teams up with amazing talent like this (and on all her previous albums) she shines even brighter. If you are new to Eleni, check out her previous work, especially Snakebite. Note: amazingly, Eleni has graced our live studio not once, but twice.
FCC clean. My picks: everything she has ever put to tape. Okay, if I have to… 2 (!!), 4, 7, 11
1) smokey slow jazzy late night love ballad, vocs/guitar/sax + lots of sex
2) Heres the hit: waltzing, full band with vibes, singing about “girls girls girls”, kick ass!!
3) classic Eleni, smarmy minor
4) minimal, the power of her voice, but cool percussion and a distant bowed cello begins to build
5) minimal, almost low fi, very live “living room” feel, lovely waltz
6) lilting “pretty” melodies, waltzy, about “the make-out king”, cool treatments
7) that little old Martin guitar of hers sounds so good, trippy lap steel, oh this sounds like a warm pleasant breeze on your face feels
8) love song, ode to kissing a stranger in a desert town at night during a T-storm, its just so perfect, so perfect
9) marching drums, dobro and lots of slide give it a folksy bluesy tinge, but not
10) triplety upbeat strumming and drumming but slow phrasing, Hammond, and overall narcotic delivery
11) her lips and throat are right up to your ears on this one, ay yi yi!! Slow swingy, smokey and smarmy, sexier than a warm wet spot, bowed bass, who needs Viagra when you have this song
12) old style piano in this smokey lounge jazz number, smarmy and junked out
