Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2007-03-06 | ||
Conventional jazz guitar, backed by two stalwarts of the ECM label: Gary Peacock (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). Like an ECM record, lots of cool-handed intensity, w/drums and cymbals slapping, but a somehow delicate air. Improvisations get "out there" in a soft, non-skronky way. 1- Mid/fast; aggressive w/soft touch 2- Floaty, slowish 3- Mid/fast. Tumbling but reasonably catchy theme. 4- Oud. Lightly scrambly, fairly fast. 5- Oud. "World" feel, a midtempo pulse w/ fast solo intro. 6- Dark, almost Spanish guitar feel 7- Almost country intro in the bass. High, sparkly guitar solo 8- Slow shuffle, ballad feel. 9- Fairly fast-paced, cool hipness 10- Oud, w/slow intro into a nice marching beat 11- Midtempo, ECM wandering; builds a cool intensity 12- Calmly mid/fast, active. w/bass solo. 13- Scattery, fairly fast 14- Quiet, spare |
