M’lumbo – Sacrifices to the Neon Gods
Reviewed by Sadie O., 5/3/07
TV themes and other recognizable music, bits of dialog, jazz, unstructured psychotica… Cooked up in big pots by “natives” from very bad b-movies set in Kwanzimoko… OK, it’s really hard to describe, part “found” music, part improv, lots remix. Cuts devolve and evolve. I guess we’ll leave it at that.
No FCCs, few recognizable bits of speech. I like 2 best.
1. ***Aloha suckers, indeed! High action lounge twist-a-gogo with voodoo punch. Quiets down, but the natives are clearly still restless… seconds of applause at end.
2. ****bird songs, high speed Addams Dixieland, Jeannie mambo, etc. Gnarly!
3. **downtempo, spy drama music as played by tin ants. Large tin ants. Devolves quite a bit into chanting and horns… Disturbed.
4. ***who doesn’t love the Bond theme? With natives planning supper in the background. Something’s coming that’s scarier than cannibals, but I’m not sure what it is. Locusts, maybe. And cows. OK, now it’s gone just plain WEIRD.
5. **slow Dixieland horns and bits of proclamations, then upbeat and jolly Dixieland with sirens and kazoos. Groovy syncopation and cheap psychoanalysis. Nice slinky jazzy stuff in the middle, then descent into chaos.
6. *slow… the cows are playing Mickey Mouse using giant rubber bands. So, why do I feel so nervous? Mostly semi-formless – maybe that’s why. The coyotes don’t help matters.
7. ***animal noises and cacophony. Electric guitars and frogs, nice bit of pots and pans syncopation. Cuica! 15 secs applause at end.
8. **deformed keyboard, then disjointed Hitchcock – more FAO Schwartz than scary, though. Well.. now it’s scary again. With an inexplicably lovely bit of singing from who knows where in the world. Lots of thumb piano.
9. ***jazzy running bassline, bits of order in the chaos, bops and growls. Spoken bits of commercials. The Mussorgsky bit is REALLY cool.
10. **Les Paul gets all high on hisself, then some happy bongos and horns. More Classical Xmas stuff, odd b-movie dialog. LOTS of applause at end.
