ANDREW BISHOP: Hank Williams Project Envoi, 2007 ODDBALL JAZZ-FOLK – This unique and very cool octet plays music written, performed or simply inspired by country music legend Hank Williams, although it’s not always easy to tell. Augmented by banjo, violin and cello, and deadpan vocals, the band spins between avant-garde territory, slow folk tragedy and cute, happy ditties. Love it! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8… but I liked it all. 1. 4:33 – slow folk strings & guitar, builds: gently surging and wistful 2. 5:02 – urgent pulse, fast banjo, violin spars with guitar, angular sax solos 3. 5:04 – haunting male vocal over slow bass and low, sad murmurings 4. 3:00 – upbeat country classic w/ deadpan vocal, scat & a boogaloo beat 5. 5:09 – a warmer, slightly drunken-sounding, scattery revision of #1 6. 8:14 – circular grooves, happy, folksy solos; gradually drifts further “out”… 7. 3:01 – Weird! plinky noises, slow vocal trio, a classic country song. 8. 5:10 – happy classic: upbeat, folksy, filtered vocal, optimistic strings 9. 6:26 – slow, Indian-sounding vocal soars over turbulent drone, then a sneaky, exotic melody. Trippy stuff. 10. 3:19 – relaxed, quiet, “Happy Trails” style revision of #1 [ Fo ] 1-Jul-07 |
