Abstract free improv, a quartet of local folks that includes vocals, sax, trombone, piano, and bass. Prickly horns complemented by subtle vocal sounds that don't overwhelm each track, presented in mostly short packages (many songs under 2 minutes). Track titles come from Mark Rothko paintings. Ariel Shbolet (sax) Aurora Josephson (voice) Jen Baker (trombone) Scott R. Looney (piano) Damon Smith (double bass) 1- A slowish flow, quiet start. Nice sense of drama to it. STOPS with 2 minutes left, then rebuilds for the ending 2- Insistent and gently abrasive, with vocal cat-cries 3- Careful fast blurts, stumbly 4- Sparkly piano, an active little piece 5- Graceful long-toned flow 6- Processional buildup with some jangly percussion, then quieter 7- Choppy fast burble, gives way to slow melodic tones 8- Playful small noises, chattery. Voice/trombone duet. 9- Small, calm 10- Bubbly, at a fairly strong clip. Hits a very quiet patch after 3 minutes, then rebuilds to a gentle burble 11- Mystical and slow 12- Happy horn burbles, nice slowdown ending 13- Dire, slow horn blare 14- Trombone/voice lead: spare, calm, but fairly fast 15- Quiet but fast, dramatic. 16- Slow groans, builds to a more upbeat, popping flow |
