BrakesBrakesBrakes – The Beatific Visions Reviewed by Witz
Frenetic catchy punk-rock. The second release from the Brighton, UK band is a quick, frantic album packed with catchy riffs and choruses, but also full of commentary on the world that we live in. Self described as “literate country-punk,” the album has some nice variety and well constructed tracks, but does not strike me as particularly memorable. Eamon Hamilton’s voice, for better or worse (both on this album), is very distinctive, and provides the core of the album. FCC CLEAN
**1) Bright, poppy track starts it off. Rolling guitars, catchy verse and chorus. (2:00)
2) Sex Pistols sounding. (2:06)
*3) Country-punk about love. (2:01)
4) Slower, quieter country ballad. (3:48)
5) Semi-political, semi-weird, semi- Dead Kennedys… (2:00)
6) Soft, guitar picking song about a woman—“nice” (2:26)
7) Medium tempo, foot tapping song again about a woman. (2:54)
8) 65 seconds of frenetic confusion about “the war” and “pineapples/porcupines.”(1:05)
*9) Slightly harder, punky, Sex Pistols-y, catchy track…that also kinda sounds like the theme song to Friends…(2:27)
*10) Rollicking country-rock track. (2:21)
11) Slow, quiet, nice vocals, moody. (4:57)
