MUSHROOM with EDDIE GALE: Joint Happening
Hyena, 2007
PSYCHEDELIC JAZZ JAM – Mushroom’s previous CDs are filed in General, and at first it seems this one belongs there too. But every time Gale’s moody trumpet cuts in, the band’s hypnotically swirling stoned-cosmic shamanism changes into something definitely jazzy. It’s a natural fit. If you aren’t high, the music will take you there. Just don’t forget to cue up the next disc while you’re grooving out, dude.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6
1. 07:39 – slow and sparkling, trumpet musings, into a conga groove
2. 09:30 – exotic spirals, lumpy rhythm, tweaky keyboard, laid-back trumpet
3. 18:11 – live tribal hypnosis: incessant rolling groove, trumpet/flute/piano sparring, jam gets loose… cool marimba, lots of little feedback spikes, percussion gets dense, fine trumpet solo. Excellent.
4. 08:01 – amorphous intro; sulking rock jam w/exotic beat & straight trumpet
5. 03:20 – live & muddy: crazy piano swirling with marimba, sinister trumpet
6. 08:03 – funky dub jams quietly w/organ, then guitar freaks out; mellow end
7. 15:23 – live: very low, into nonstop tribal beat w/bright trumpet; sax, marimba, keyboard all sound like they’re in another room.
