The Pines – Sparrows In the Bell Reviewed by Witz

Melancholy, haunting, folk. Currently residing in Minneapolis, The Pines consists of Iowa natives David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey. On this, their first major release, the two draw on their folk and blues background to create a melancholy and haunting album with some interesting depth to it.

1) Dark and haunting. Mid-tempo. (3:49)
**2) Powerful and building—deep tension. (4:21)
3) Brighter, with hints of Dylan. Rolling and up-tempo. (3:40)
4) Slow and somber. Very poetic with nice finger picking on guitar. (3:34)
5) Plodding and doomed sounding song about life and worries. (3:29)
*6) Gentle guitar and sorrow-edged vocals. (4:42)
7) Nick Drake sounding soft music and lyrics with nostalgic undertones. (4:02)
8) Version of the popularly covered blues/folk standard. (2:54)
9) Soft and hypnotizing—brightness covered by melancholy. (4:39)
*10) Rolling rhythms and soft, drawn out vocals. Sense of urgency and a sad earnestness. (3:41)
