PANDELIS KARAYORGIS TRIO: Carameluia
Ayler, 2007

SUBDUED AVANT-GARDE – Pianist Karayorgis sketches the bare outlines of melodies with little knots of notes, leaving the centers open. Bass and drums wrap around him in constantly shifting, elastic shapes. This is interesting improvisation that is quite accessible. It’s hard to pick one track over another, but I’m especially fond of #6.

1. 6:18 – starts spare, steps carefully, trio gets tangled up and unravels
2. 7:24 – stumbling midtempo, nifty drum break midway through
3. 5:56 – ballad-like: solo piano w/bluesy touch, then trio meanders slowly
4. 8:56 – agitated, then strolls with lumpy piano chords, relaxed bass solo
5. 7:09 – chatty piano intro, touch of Monk, good rolling drums, bass solo
6. 5:28 – this one saunters: lazy bass, more Monkish piano, picking bass
7. 5:24 – wandering midtempo, piano gets into trills and undulation
8. 3:51 – quiet murmurings, like whispered secrets, bass takes it home
9. 6:43 – great drums in this one, piano starts spare but gets busy
