SAM NEWSOME: Monk Abstractions
self-release, 2007

SOLO SOPRANO SAXOPHONE – Known as the leader of the band Global Unity, Newsome here uses the music of Thelonious Monk as a showcase for extended sax techniques. Newsome employs multiphonics – squeezing multiple notes from his horn simultaneously – fluid time, dynamic control and judicious use of space.
Pick pretty much any track and you’ll hear a mysterious-sounding blend of popping, squeaking, long tones, overtones and jumbles. Might make a good interlude between two noisier improv tracks.

Free Improvisation: 1, 5, 8, 10, 14
Based on Monk tunes: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15
