KENNY MacKENZIE TRIO feat. SHENOLE LATIMER: Closer to the Day

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – This friendly straight-ahead disc has joyful original tunes and crisp playing. There are some decent compositions here, but it’s the band’s sheer exuberance that makes the CD notable. Why can’t every modern-bop group show this much spirit?

1. 5:23 – warm, tender jazz waltz: sax climbs small peaks over happy piano
2. 5:44 – nifty ticker-tape rhythm, piano solo bursts from quiet start, breezy sax
3. 5:58 – catchy, bashing theme; light & easy piano, nice bass solo
4. 5:48 – dreamy midtempo ballad, bright piano
5. 5:18 – upbeat swinger: hepcat bass, happy sax, bouncy piano, perky drums
6. 5:23 – skip it: lite contemporary breeze w/latinized rhythm.
7. 4:30 – strolling tune, starts clumpy, turns buoyant, uplifting, speedy
8. 5:16 – medium, surging ballad, thoughtfully optimistic sax & piano
