BÉVINDA: “Outubro” Dunya/Felmay, 2007 Portuguese fado with more spontaneous flair than usual: unusual instrumentation (including tabla) creates an indefinable old-world feel behind the singer’s deeply emotional vocals, while instrumental solos add excitement. Mostly original material; recorded live in Italy. All quite good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11 1. 4:39 – delicate vocal & guitar; becomes a sweeping midtempo fantasy 2. 3:59 – relaxed and mysterious; nice guitar work 3. 6:13 – upbeat: a speedy, spinning waltz; second half is a long tabla solo! 4. 6:17 – quiet old-world mystery, many middle-eastern touches 5. 4:20 – relaxed tempo, slow guitars tiptoe behind aching, passionate vocal 6. 4:37 – modern sound, with bits of rock, cool vox, Indian vocal percussion 7. 6:06 – soft and sad, alternating with a fast, devil-may-care dance 8. 4:43 – hushed, furtive sound over low tabla, builds up to huge wailing surge 9. 3:50 – pretty solo for Portuguese guitar, wonderful technique 10. 4:08 – low, undulating tune; just voice & guitar, quietly moving 11. 5:23 – tense: starts quietly, becomes a speedy, aggressive folksong 12. 8:23 – guitar conversation into swaying tune; upbeat flamenco-ish 2nd half [ Fo ] 27-Mar-08 | ||
