Album Review

Jazz Excursion, 2007

Really solid modern-mainstream jazz, with great ensemble textures and some tasty solos, especially from VanArsdale on tenor sax. The ballads are wistfully engaging and the uptempo numbers have great propulsion.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 9

1. 7:42 – rolling hardbop: burning horn solos, meaty bass, smashing rhythm
2. 9:41 – cool & relaxed, nice melody, bluesy strolls for sax, trumpet, piano
3. 7:32 – slightly mysterious air, a slow drag w/ introspective solos
4. 8:41 – fast: bashing drums, perky soprano sax, soaring trumpet, nifty piano
5. 7:26 – chewy bass intro; resolute marching sound, fine piano & big horns
6. 9:38 – solo piano intro; calm ballad, lyrical soprano sax, ebbs & surges
7. 8:13 – hipster bop, fun drums & happy horns, solos get rambling
8. 8:26 – cool drumbeat into r&b-tinged midtempo ballad, soulful solos
9. 5:23 – standard, taken slow and gentle, with interesting harmonies
