Y Society – Travel At Your Own Pace Reviewed by Witz

Jazzy Hip-Hop. Boston MC, Insight, and Washington D.C. DJ and producer, Damu the Fudgemunk, come together to form Y Society, a socially and hip-hop conscious duo. Plenty of jazzy, smooth, and brassy beats fuse easily with smooth rhymes and some good scratching. The album is immediately accessible, but has definite layers to it, and pays homage to both older hip-hop groups such as The Roots and Jurassic Five, and the new emerging hip-hop sound that’s coming from all over this country and others. FCC: 9

1) Overzealous, sincere musical intro. (1:13)
**2) Catchy breezy beat, horns, and smooth vocals. (3:39)
*3) Slow with heavy bass-line. Raps about society. Great hook. Feels like The Roots. Ends with 30 seconds of instrumentals. (5:12)
4) Good steady beat (Dirty Digits?), catchy sample vocals, and good lyrics. (3:44)
5) Jazzy, harder vocals, mellow and introspective. (4:53)
*6) More good beats and steady lyrics. Heavy bass. ENDS with speaking. (4:07)
7) Cut and scratch track. A lot of changes and beats. (3:21)
8) Some faster lyrics over some medium, mellow beats. Think Blackalicious. (3:41)
9) FCC. Raps about humanity. Faster and thoughtful vibe. (4:03)
10) More jazzy, slower, intricately rhythmic beats and rhymes about life. Ends with instrumentals. (4:34)
*11) Slower beats and rhymes, but looking at “What’s Next” and where Earth and society are heading. (3:12)
12) Harder, angrier vocals, and continuous flowing lyrics. (3:53)
*13) Great beat, scratching, and vocals. About setting examples in life. (3:56)
14) Long, speedy with lots of variation and messages. Big change around 5 min. (6:46)
15) Exit track—a lot of goodbyes and scratching over chilled out beat. (3:42)
16) A lot of talking at the beginning. Mellow, fast flow, really smooth, chilled out beat. Includes “On and On” sample. (4:23)
