ARI BROWN: Live at the Green Mill
Delmark, 2007

Stalwart of Chicago jazz and the AACM scene, saxophonist Brown plays straight bop, modern jazz and free music with equal conviction. On his first album as a leader since 1998, Brown’s gruff sound conveys deep emotions without pretense or beating you over the head, and his band gives perfect support. It’s an adventurous but accessible set.
All tracks worthwhile.

1. 13:50 – casually paced, modal postbop with a cool theme: burly sax solo, slicing trumpet, tasty piano all keep it flowing smoothly
2. 14:04 – arresting solo sax intro, heartfelt ballad with after-hours feel. Entrancing sax solo & lovely piano; a quick 14 minutes
3. 11:03 – deep midtempo groove: soprano sax starts relaxed, grows intense
4. 06:30 – great funky groove; Brown plays the heck out of both his saxes.
5. 11:18 – gentle, lyrical ballad: beautiful flute & piano, muted trumpet. Nice!
6. 08:46 – chugging postmodern groove with edgy harmonies, horns pack a punch but keep the lid on, boiling over only occasionally
