OUT TO LUNCH: Excuse Me While I Do the Boogaloo Accurate, 2007 David Levy (clarinet & sax) leads a freewheeling band through a mash-up of classic funk, improvisational jazz, electronica and a bunch of other things. Hard to pin down, but it’s a fun ride. Every track different. Tracks tend to bleed into each other, so watch those transitions! All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12 1. 6:57 – burning funk groove w/James Brown-ish horn stings & hot solos 2. 4:28 – ambient electronic beat with flute & piano wafting through 3. 1:48 – steady midtempo beat, funky jazz horns trade off a cool phrase 4. 8:17 – mysterious dub with jazz, reggae, klezmer influences; good solos 5. 4:50 – fast percussion loop, lilting jazz lines, Caribbean touch 6. 1:20 – relaxed ballroom ballad, like a slow-dance at a wedding reception 7. 6:27 – solo organ intro; skittery midtempo funk, nice trumpet 8. 3:29 – sort of a melting trip-hop jazz thing with great trumpet, strange bass 9. 7:48 – lowdown bass, klezmer clarinet, slow beat: creeps, then wigs out 10. 7:27 – slow horns, then laid-back 70s cinematic funk-jazz, kind of trippy 11. 6:41 – second-line New Orleans jam with a bit of country soul in it 12. 2:52 – solo organ eulogy, then funeral horns + soulful vocalizing [ Fo ] 16-Feb-08 |
