RICHARD BOULGER: Blues Twilight b-1 Music, 2007

SOARING POSTBOP – Richard Boulger’s trumpet burns brightly here, commanding attention with a soulful, punchy sound that recalls the consciousness-raising jazz of the 1960s and ‘70s. The late pianist John Hicks adds depth and spirit to five tracks (1,2,3,5,10), while Anthony Wonsey’s more introspective piano gives a thoughtful spin to the rest.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 7, 10

Tracks 4 & 11 are solo trumpet interludes, both very nice.

1. 2:22 – rising, spiritual sound, overlapping horns & lovely piano
2. 7:07 – midtempo: catchy fanfare, flaring trumpet, moody sax, uplifting piano
3. 8:35 – ‘60s Miles Davis sound, haunting melody & pleasing solos
5. 7:35 – takin’ it easy: a swinging midtempo stroll
6. 6:58 – gentle ballad, trumpet calls to the skies, relaxed flute
7. 3:20 – burning trumpet/drum duo improvisation, bop sound
8. 5:45 – midtempo postbop swagger: solid trumpet, furtive sax, strolling piano
9. 8:40 – tender piano intro, sad slow ballad, picks up later
10. 8:56 – relaxed tempo: cool melody, angular soprano sax, soaring trumpet
12. 8:41 – flowing, serious sound; thoughtful horn solos & uplifting piano
