GREGG AUGUST SEXTET: One Peace
Iacuessa, 2007

Streetwise modern jazz tunes come riding in on August’s low, suspenseful bass riffs, combining forward momentum with frequent twists & turns. Often feels like a miniaturized big band in the ensemble sections. Great listening, with strong performances and lots of tension.

No duds here. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8

1. 6:20 – quick pulse, twisty & cinematic; cool sax, trumpet, bass solos
2. 5:19 – urgent rhythm under slow group horns, then speedy solos
3. 5:17 – relaxed, dusky ballad: really nice trumpet & ensemble
4. 6:59 – surging, retro (70s) sound: wobbly sax solo & Fender Rhodes
5. 2:37 – slow unison melody: builds up, then very quietly dies out
6. 6:15 – sleazy “crime jazz” drag turns into a fast ‘60s chase
7. 8:34 – thoughtful ballad, very nice horn interactions, heavy second half
8. 8:03 – snappy theme separates angular solos
9. 5:30 – relaxed late-nite groove, cool stuff going on in the rhythm section
10. 4:21 – exotic, slowly falling theme, interesting horn textures
