HORACE SILVER: Live at Newport ‘58 Blue Note, 2008 Yet another unreleased jazz gem dug up from the Library of Congress vaults, featuring pianist Horace Silver’s great quintet live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. Silver, father of the soulful, hard-edged East Coast style known as hardbop, sounds really good here, and the audio quality is quite decent. Trumpeter Louis Smith was only with Silver for a few months, and “Tippin’” (track 2) is a fairly obscure tune (B-side to the “Señor Blues” 45), making this set even more of a treat.
