TIGRAN HAMASYAN TRIO: New Era Nocturne, 2007 MAINSTREAM/WORLD-JAZZ – Winner of the 2006 Thelonious Monk piano competition, this 20-year old Armenian-American pianist teams up with French players Louis & François Moutin for an engaging modern set that’s full of vibrant energy and sweeping solo flights. All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10 1. 7:49 – vocal percussion, stabbing theme, quick-paced solos 2. 5:50 – electro-acoustic tune based on repeated phrase, traces of hip-hop 3. 5:04 – melancholy ballad, very pretty with a gentle sway 4. 11:53 – Armenian folkdance in odd meters, aggressive theme, rolling solos 5. 4:21 – T. Monk tune staggers along with a quasi-reggae beat 6. 7:56 – tranquil solo intro, then an odd blend of retro-soul and speedy bop 7. 9:49 – carnival organ leads into spinning gypsy tune; lengthy piano solo 8. 10:05 – Armenian folksong; starts quiet, builds up and crashes, cool solos 9. 8:22 – Miles Davis tune with the rhythm twisted up, rolling solos 10. 6:27 – dark, mysterious piano leads into gentle melody over quick pulse [ Fo ] 7-Apr-08 |
