Blue Note, 2008

SOUL-JAZZ: Ten of the most frequently sampled rare-groove tracks from Blue Note’s ‘60s/’70s catalog are compiled here; you’ll recognize licks from A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, J Dilla, etc. (see liners for details). It’s a mixed bag – some of these tracks are obscure for a reason – but others kick ass, and it’s always fun to play “spot the sample.”

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 10

1. 9:00 – lazy soul-drag sax with organ; great Idris Muhammad drum lick
2. 4:10 – FANTASTIC mellow trippy trance glide, sweet organ/vibes/bass
3. 6:12 – smooth 70s soul, textbook Mizell layered production
4. 2:55 – David Axelrod production: melodramatic horns & creeping guitar
5. 6:36 – cool hippie organ groove: wordless vox, mellow horns, funky guitar
6. 3:23 – great beat for a lame big-band blues song. Not Joe Williams’ best…
7. 6:43 – mellow instrumental pop: relaxed guitar & cheesy organ, digs in later
8. 7:33 – funky, chunky, stripped-down cover of Blood Sweat & Tears hit
9. 4:38 – great funky flute overdubs, cool bass & percussion
10. 6:45 – medium-tempo cover jam, nice 'n' greasy, cool vocal chorus
