HANS GLAWISCHNIG: Panorama
Sunnyside, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – Respected Austrian-American bassist leads a stellar line-up, including Chick Corea (2,6) and saxophonists Miguel Zenón (1,3,7,9) & David Binney (4,8). All tunes are quartet or trio originals, mainstream but often edgy, with dusky harmony and elastic rhythms.

Fo's Picks: 1, 4, 6, 9 ... maybe 7, 8

1. 6:08 – hard rolling 3/4 groove with tumbling sax & striding piano
2. 7:28 – chewy line with Latin touch, dreamy piano, shadowy harmony
3. 6:16 – an ominous fantasy, many tempo and mood shifts
4. 5:53 – spiky, fusion-y theme; sneaky sax heats up, soaring guitar
5. 6:47 – gentle, uplifting ballad with a bit of soul
6. 7:09 – sneaky trio jam: piano prances on tiptoe, cool dialogue w/bass
7. 5:51 – weary-sounding theme, solos float, fly and drift
8. 8:39 – nice bowed bass bookends a bright, somewhat exotic bolero
9. 6:07 – fast-paced bop burner, good solos all around
