JOHN ELLIS: Dance Like There's No Tomorrow
Hyena, 2008

FUNKY JAZZ – Saxophonist, formerly with Charlie Hunter, gets into a New Orleans groove with sousaphone, organ & drums. The band had never worked together before recording, but they click right away. The music is funky in a fresh, modern way, not really dance music but fun.

Fo's Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7

1. 8:48 – jubilant groove, like a street parade to a revival meeting
2. 6:38 – laid-back funky walk: icy organ vs. hot sax
3. 8:36 – sinister modern-jazz groove w/flying soprano sax, spins & rolls
4. 7:23 – relaxed stroll, warm but bittersweet, finds some interesting nooks
5. 6:14 – raunchy tango with a few bizarre moments, sousaphone solo
6. 8:50 – relaxed 3/4, somewhat elusive and lumpy, many shifts
7. 5:42 – eeek! weirdo clowns get into a happy zydeco stomp w/accordion
8. 6:09 – gliding melancholy, heartfelt solos from organ & bass clarinet
9. 6:46 – gleeful, bluesy march with some serious breaks
