BEN ALLISON & MAN-SIZE SAFE: Little Things Run the World
Palmetto, 2007
MODERN JAZZ – Few contemporary jazz composers have a sound as distinctive as bassist Ben Allison – his tunes are instantly identifiable for their crisp but laid-back approach, steady pacing and hummable, lightly spinning melodies, which often follow similar thematic lines. This quartet disc with trumpet, guitar and bass (plus occasional sax) has a casual air and hints of Americana or cinematic touches.
I like it all. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8
1. 5:55 – serene trumpet/nervous pulse; chunky guitar solo, then trumpet wails
2. 5:36 – confident stroll; appealing melody & some Beatles-esque touches
3. 5:42 – crackling start, settles into feather-light walk, then warm & easygoing
4. 8:23 – slow, quiet drag becomes a comfy ballad, long bass solo in middle
5. 6:10 – relaxed and spinning, very friendly guitar sound & upbeat trumpet
6. 7:13 – calm sax/trumpet vs. restless rhythm, reminiscent of “Nature Boy”
7. 7:20 – John Lennon tune: slow, bluesy shuffle, trumpet & guitar take lead
8. 7:00 – a slightly sinister stagger, horns have a sneering quality
