BEN ALLISON & MAN-SIZE SAFE: Little Things Run the World Palmetto, 2007 MODERN JAZZ – Few contemporary jazz composers have a sound as distinctive as bassist Ben Allison – his tunes are instantly identifiable for their crisp but laid-back approach, steady pacing and hummable, lightly spinning melodies, which often follow similar thematic lines. This quartet disc with trumpet, guitar and bass (plus occasional sax) has a casual air and hints of Americana or cinematic touches. I like it all.
