STEBMO: Stebmo
Southern Lord, 2008

Keyboardist Stebmo (Steve Moore) certainly gets around: he’s played with Sufjan Stevens, Laura Viers, SunnO))) and many others across genres from acoustic to black metal. As a leader, his sound is equally eclectic... and delightfully weird. I’m OK with calling this jazz, but it comes across more like instrumental post-rock -- in instrumentation, rhythm, and Tucker Martine’s layered, grubby production aesthetic. With Todd Sickafoose, Matt Chamberlain, Eyvind Kang, Karl Blau.

All tracks worth checking out. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 7

1. 4:36 – strange: droning violin, ethereal voice, clunky rhythm; chugs wearily
2. 3:37 – upbeat, simple piano with a sorta hillbilly beat and sampled whoops
3. 2:02 – electronic doodads back up melancholy solo piano
4. 3:42 – catchy keyboard theme strolls through bashing drums
5. 4:20 – mellow keyboards & clarinet in a tinkly landscape, simple drums
6. 3:34 – gentle clarinet & piano walk in an echoing, dubby space
7. 7:04 – serious but catchy: walking gait, swirling overdubs, steadfast piano
8. 1:40 – moody solo piano interlude
9. 5:57 – somber, hard-edged piano, soft strings & winds, background noises
