MATT ULERY’S LOOM: Music Box Ballerina
Woolgathering, 2008

MODERN JAZZ - Led by an eclectic bassist, this odd Chicago sextet incorporates elements of American and European folk music, with a dash of indie-rock thrown in. It’s a sort of rustic modernism, familiar yet fresh and unique, with sweet melody anchored by stomping drums.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8

1. 4:49 – scurries and stomps; the melody and rhythm suggest 90s indie-rock
2. 10:03 – prancing melody bridges melancholy solos, an Appalachian dream; picks up energy for violin solo in the second half
3. 6:13 – light, familiar melody; band surges around sax solo
4. 9:01 – tense intro, then an easygoing ballad with a few harmonic twists
5. 6:51 – old-world intro, gently spinning tune w/clompy rhythm, several moods
6. 6:11 – soft ballad in unusual tones, pretty vox by singer Grazyna Auguscik
7. 8:25 – relaxed intro, bright Balkan sound with striding rhythm; strong violin
8. 11:22 – fat circus music waddles and reels, breaks down; discordant accordion for 2 minutes, band drags its way back, bizarre ending
