COREY WILKES: Drop It
Delmark, 2008
FUNKY MODERN BOP – Debut CD from a rising young trumpeter. Wilkes’ name may be familiar from Chicago avant-garde ensembles, but this is contemporary jazz with simple themes and a super-cool, r&b/hip-hop inflected vibe that’s perfect for chilling out. Just so nice...
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10
1. 2:43 – very cool spoken-word; low trumpet/bass/drums behind it
2. 5:52 – simple chill-out groove; muted trumpet & cool sax take it easy
3. 3:53 – slightly spaced-out groove; trumpet solo has wah-wah effects
4. 6:28 – stomping beat, tough horns: solos are simply stated but strong
5. 0:55 – intro to #6: slow and romantic
6. 5:27 – slinky soul-ballad groove: sweet keyboard solo, sexy trumpet
7. 6:14 – great funky bassline! Everyone just rides that little groove…
8. 7:39 – relaxed ballad; bass & piano very nice on this one
9. 8:23 – rolling groove, electronic trumpet effects, striking vocal trills
10. 8:46 – Tina Turner song: low, funky burn w/killer Dee Alexander vocals
11. 10:45 – live version of #3: stronger groove, also takes more chances
