PHIL MARKOWITZ TRIO: Catalysis
Sunnyside, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – This cool trio brings a friendly mainstream air to some obliquely inventive tunes, smiling inscrutably as it plunges into deep waters. Markowitz has a distinctive touch on piano, sensitive but often drifting towards abstraction or ablaze with sparkling complexity.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7

1. 4:30 – sneaky swing with an airy feel, follows twisty melodic lines
2. 7:14 – dramatic piano; ominous swells disrupt a wide-open, placid sea
3. 5:17 – uptempo, staccato melodic streams in a sort of morse-code rhythm
4. 6:16 – spacious and gently flowing, melodic piano counterpoint, no chords
5. 9:45 – cool: slides through a series of oddly ambiguous walking grooves
6. 11:41 – slow tone poem: moody, aching, very intimate
7. 6:25 – uptempo, buzzing interplay: brief bursts and spinning runs
8. 5:39 – introspective piano, relaxed walking rhythm; soulful yet obscure
