ANAT COHEN: Notes from the Village
Anzic, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – The seemingly ubiquitous Anat Cohen’s 4th disc as a leader finds her on a variety of clarinets and saxophones, along with an agile, simpatico band that injects heavy doses of Latin and Jewish music alike. These are the sorts of tunes that feel organic, with strong ensemble sounds and moods that shift quickly yet seamlessly. Solid stuff from the emerging new mainstream of modern jazz.

All tracks very nice! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8

1. 9:08 – upbeat, shifting multi-culti feel: bright soprano sax, retro-funky keys
2. 6:27 – gentle, melancholy ballad: soft, billowing feel, sweet clarinet & guitar
3. 8:22 – Cuban classic, modernized and mysterious, very fine clarinet work
4. 9:13 – impressionist Coltrane ballad: soft, pretty and a bit enigmatic
5. 7:08 – upbeat, blues-tinged; happy clarinet strolls along, cool-toned bass
6. 5:43 – dreamlike fantasy: tenor sax walks through tinkly & surging patterns
7. 5:20 – resolute Sam Cooke cover; sweet, vocal-like clarinet, lots of soul
8. 9:05 – speedy, lilting Fats Waller classic, clarinet dances and swings
