Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2008-10-24 | ||
Seven-piece band doing loose, grooving jams. It's free jazz, but accessible and even danceable. Long tracks that you could easily fade into and out of, for airplay. The louder tracks are more obvious, but don't overlook the subtle, tuneful slyness of track 2. The long song titles are proverbs from a people of Nigeria. 1- (14:35) Happy and goofy/drunken march. Some nice crazy soloing by Cole on some kind of exotic reed. A really nice jam. 2- (12:24) Quiet, deep improv, with some soulfully jazzy tones from trombone (or similar horn). Accessible and swaying. 3- (23:33) Exotic, bouncing mid/fast groove. Builds into a happy jam, strong pulse. 4- (24:54) Swirling exotic flutes, a calm '60s feel. Bass solo, then a freer, blooming jam with tuba and sax prominent. Gets blazing and out there. |
