THE LOST TRIO: Plays Solid Gold Hits!
Evander, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – Long-running trio of local jazz adventurers focuses entirely on pop songs for this understated, loose-limbed disc. It’s an odd batch, including common jazz targets like the Beatles, Radiohead and Björk, but also less obvious choices R.E.M., Black Sabbath and Juana Molina. They don’t go very far out but the spirit is there.
All very good. Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 10
1. 3:23 – easy groove, tumbling drums; bass takes first chorus, then sax
2. 4:19 – relaxed: gently warped bass and bluesy sax
3. 6:18 – slow ‘n’ sleazy drag, prominent drums, good sax, a bit abstract
4. 6:46 – bass intro, then a cool work-song groove; relatively straight
5. 5:06 – very cool South American vibe, sax starts buzzing like a flying insect
6. 4:44 – interesting dynamics here: bass & drums interweave, lilting sax
7. 4:17 – metal classic given lively swing, but with an unsettled edge
8. 7:29 – lazy-day vibe: nice trio interplay, takes its time, long solos
9. 4:23 – active rhythm, hovering melody; cool bass solo, agile sax
10. 6:07 – easy medium tempo, a bit exotic, a lot going on under surface
11. 2:34 – (hidden track) slow processional: haunting sax, bowed bass
