Reviewed 2008-12-01
Fairly straightforward jazz with open space for some creative soloing, much like Dave Douglas does (this is released on his label). Sax/clarinet and trumpet lead the quartet, with bassist Bates doing all the composing.

Michael Bates (bass)
Jeff Davis (drums)
Quinain Nachoff (sax, clarinet)
Russ Johnson (trumpet)

1- Pecking mid/fast feel, upbeat clarinet, kinda fun.
2- Nice big declaration intro. Turns more spare but still very active for some great sax and trumpet solos.
3- Slow, sad, stately.
4- Upbeat
5- Euro-sidewalk-cafe feel, a bit circusy.
6- Gently slow, a light homey touch, like a happy scene from a kids' movie. Very quiet start.
7- Klezmery mid/fast, builds up to a fun, chugging theme.
8- Swaggering midtempo, a touch of blues, lots of buzzy sax. Cool sound overall.
9- Mid/fast with a dark theme.
