Killer live set from the rock guitar legend. This is all instrumental and showcases Beck’s amazing range from full on rock god soloing to laid back reggae, funk, jazz & blues to prog and a few things in between. Unlike his contemporaries he’s too not bloated or outdated here. Much of this sounds phenomenal - not just him but his whole band. ((((1)))) Really great use of slide and a electric rock working of Ravel’s “Bolero”. The drum sound could be better, though. (((((2))))) Total prog fusion-funk. Never mind the jam bands this is where a lot of it started (and without the pachouli factor). ((((((3))))))) Funky and guitar wailin’ take on an old Billy Cobham tune. ((((((4)))))) Rather good, mostly mellow fusion jam. A great example of how to play proper fusion/moody 70’s stuff. (((5))) Reggae-like vibe with some scuttling blues, rock and fusion-ish bits. ((6)) Really good bass & guitar but the 80’s Miami Vice keyboards ruin it! (OK, this is a Jan Hammer tune so, there ya go!). ((((7)))) Slow, twangy, jazz-fusion with prominent bass & some tabla. Rather good. ((((8)))) Uptempo mix, jammin’ on blues, jazz fusion and some slinky funk parts but then throws in a blast of prog at 2:00 as well as a pretty cool drum solo. (((((9))))) Wow! Led Zep & Zappa-ish riffs (after all he was friends with Jimmy Page) and more crazy collisions of fusion, funk, blues & prog. ((((10)))) Laid back but still kinda funky. Great guitar tone and use of note resonation. ((((11))))) Very busy prog & guitar hero stuff. Lots of wild notes scrambling about but it’s also under some form of control at times. (((((12)))) Slow, “late night” blues, then gets squirrelly with a few excessive bursts then back again. ((((13)))) Fast jazz fusion with some great drumming. (((14))) Lots of bass, and tricky guitar stuff like hammer-on/pull offs, lots of note bends and swaggery bits. A pretty cool jam. (15) Pointless Beatles cover. (((16))) So-so, mellow, minimal fusion, ends with applause. |
