TONY MONACO: Live at the Orbit Room
Chicken Coup, 2009

HAMMOND B3 ORGAN – Tony Monaco doesn’t get the attention or accolades of Joey DeFrancesco or Dr. Lonnie Smith, but he burns things up quite nicely with constant low pressure and a grungy tone. This live set (Toronto, 2007) is classic organ-trio soul-jazz that takes its time, featuring extended solos that pile on the heat ever-so-gradually.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6

1. 12:15 – uptempo burner turned down to a low simmer, keeps up the tension
2. 11:24 – countrified funk, relaxed and steady: greasy guitar, icy-hot organ
3. 11:16 – sloooow ballad, sweet & tender but lapses into soap opera cheese
4. 9:01 – midtempo waltzing ballad, swings lightly, some good interplay later
5. 12:24 – upbeat and nicely funky: blues guitar solo, organ finally lets loose
6. 8:35 – edited down version of #1, for DJs on a budget (feels tighter)
7. 8:24 – edited down version of #2 … both work, take your pick
