WORLD-JAZZ – Alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa continues fusing serious Indian music and modern jazz, this time in a tight trio with guitarist Rez Abbasi and Dan Weiss on tabla. Mahanthappa achieved total synthesis on his recent Kinsmen CD, but here he steps back a bit for something closer to a mainstream jazz perspective.

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 8

1. 2:58 – slow, meditative guitar and plaintive sax moan
2. 6:51 – uptempo & twisty: sax has energy and soul, guitar winds exotically
3. 8:35 – thoughtful walking tune w/nice percussion: sober guitar, bright sax
4. 7:57 – gliding & even-tempered, with some nicely knotty diversions
5. 9:29 – repeating riffs, develops slowly: sax solo is methodical & fascinating
6. 10:08 – roaming but appealing tune, simmering tension & long tabla break
7. 6:21 – slow undulation: guitar steps out front for a rock-tinged solo
8. 5:54 – abstract intro, then speedy sax & tabla, cool sitar-like guitar
