Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2009-02-17 | ||
Alt.country, no depression stuff with crystalline male vocs like Paul Simon and Howe Gelb in a blender. Great instrumentation, recording, lyrics, a real tip of the hat to classic Nashville and solemn songwriting. Lap/Pedal steel guitar galore, piano, some gospel layered vocals, the whole nine yards. For fans of Bonnie Prince Billy, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Dylan’s “Desire” era. 1) “reasons to quit”: mid country with solemn lyrics, drug abuse, losing, growing older 2) waltzing ballad, Giant Sand vocal delivery slightly 3) slow deep waltz, classic feel 4) slow Willie Nelson flavored ballad 5) upbeat wide triplet swing/waltz, epic western folk feel 6) epic big jam Rolling Thunder Review feel, harmonica, piano, name it 7) gospel type vocal layers, slow sad ballad, almost a capela, minimal instruments 8) slow triplet ballad, dark with cool subliminal noise bed 9) less of a country feel and more of a spacey pretty pop thing, a classic feel 10) another slow country ballad, slow snare rim shot beat, dark 11) upbeat slightly drunk feel appropriate for “the party’s over” refrain |
