JASON RIGBY: The Sage
Fresh Sound/New Talent, 2008
MODERN/AVANT JAZZ – This rock-solid quintet session, Rigby’s second as a leader, finds the saxophonist clawing through impossibly thick, stormy clouds tossed up by drummer Gerald Cleaver. The structural approach to the early tracks suggests an Ornette Coleman influence, while the soulful atmosphere of the later tunes (and Fender Rhodes keyboard) recalls many of the progressive jazz records of the 1970s. But it’s very much alive and modern. Good stuff!
Jason Rigby - saxophones, flute
Russ Johnson - trumpet
Mike Holober - keyboard
Cameron Brown - bass
Gerald Cleaver - drums
* * * * | All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8
1. 9:33 – slouched dual horns, dogged soloing tossed by rhythmic hurricane
2. 7:32 – tempestuous: burning drums, strong bass and direct, stabbing solos
3. 5:22 – relaxed keyboard, flute & trumpet stay close, gusting swirls of rhythm
4. 7:54 – musicians enter one at a time; stern melody, firm walking rhythm
5. 2:53 – relaxed start, ramps up after a minute, sax thrusts and narrows
6. 7:27 – excellent bass intro; then pokes around in a funky Miles Davis mode
7. 9:51 – uptempo, circular: cool wah-wah trumpet, methodical sax, brisk keys
8. 9:45 – sparkling intro; then a mysterious soul stroll… sweetly enigmatic
