DeJOHNETTE/PATITUCCI/PEREZ: Music We Are Golden Beams, 2009 MODERN JAZZ – Marvelously engaging drum/piano/bass trio, a mix of tricky original compositions and group improvisations with tightly woven interplay. Strikes a great balance between expansiveness and intimacy; there are lots of overdubs but they don’t get in the way at all. Jack DeJohnette - drums, melodica John Patitucci - electric & acoustic bass Danilo Perez - piano, keyboard Full review at http://www.jazzobserver.com/cd_reviews/article/music_we_are/ * * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 1. 5:29 – uptempo, gypsy theme on melodica; playful, dreamy, but repetitive. 2. 7:10 – wintry improvisation into lovely meditative ballad, intimate & sad 3. 5:34 – rhythmically dense: great drums, piano romps & dodges 4. 4:34 – hip stroll becomes a series of fits and starts; improvisational feel 5. 3:51 – steady piano/melodica turns tender, then starkly melancholy 6. 5:00 – mysterious: low drums & stabbing piano, then sparse atmosphere 7. 6:19 – uptempo, busy rhythm, cool and energetic with some heavy riffing 8. 5:00 – floating ballad, romantic and bittersweet 9. 5:43 – a study in contrast: catchy rhythm, keyboard friction, eloquent bass 10. 9:34 – quiet, spacious improv gradually locks into a sort of strut 11. 3:50 – warm, pleasing ballad with vague edges, draws light from drums [ Fo ] 04/12/09 |
