Sax/piano duets, with piano leaning towards modern classical, and sax that starts from a free jazz base. Abstract stuff, all improvised but organic, a very "acoustic" session. It's carefully considered stuff, not a fast noisy blowout, and they do find space to goof around a little. I like the thoughtfulness of these pieces; fast ones like 13 are ear-catching on radio but the very slow 7 is a treat too, I think. 1- Jazzy. Heavy piano, Late-night sax played in dark, slowish clumps. Ends about 10 seconds early. 2- Slow, pensive 3- Dark. Double-sax harmony over heavy classical-toned piano. 4- A slow expansive start, builds to a stormy tumult 5- Peppy fun. Loose piano, sax fast but not overdone in response. 6- Mid/fast late-night jazz wanderings, a lower register, a nice intensity after a quiet start. 7- Very slow. Serious piano chords under expressive sax monologue. 8- Tense, fast piano exercise; careful sax tones. Jittery. 9- Rattly prepared piano. A spare feel, maybe a bit of goofing around (check the partially muted sax happening midway). 10- Tiny percussive sounds. Drumbeats from the piano's insides. 11- Spare, artsy. Builds to a nice rattle. 12- 47-seconds of silence? Or, near-silence. 13- Swayingly chaotic, mid/fast. Solid thump of an ending. |
